Bone grafting

Bone grafting (with artificial or natural bone) is most often needed when there is not enough bone to place implants. Bone can be added during sinus lift procedures, immediately after an extraction, or by means of bone grafts.

Bone grafting in sinus lift procedures (sinus augmentation) is covered in detail in the sinus lift section.

Bone grafting in sockets immediately after extraction

The socket is the area of bone in which the tooth root sits. When periodontal disease (periodontitis), trauma or a root infection has destroyed the socket, it needs to be rebuilt so that an implant can be placed later. If the socket is not rebuilt in these cases, accelerated bone resorption occurs, which will later prevent the implant from being placed or will result in an unsightly bone defect.

Socket reconstruction is carried out after the affected tooth has been extracted and the infection has been removed from the tooth socket. Bone graft material is then placed in the socket and the area is stitched to seal the material off from the outside environment. Depending on the nature of the original condition, you may be prescribed an antibiotic for a few days.

After the bone graft material has been placed, it takes a few months for it to integrate with the natural bone.

Then, once healing is complete, an implant will most often be placed in the area filled with bone.

Bone grafts

Where many years have passed since teeth were extracted, the bone that held the teeth will continue to resorb, as there are no longer any teeth to maintain its level. In this case, placing implants can be difficult or impossible. Bone grafts make it possible to place implants of the right size and function, and your appearance will improve remarkably.

Bone grafting is also used to repair the supporting bone of teeth that has been destroyed by periodontal disease.

The bone used for bone grafts is first harvested from the patient, from another area of the jaw. Special collagen membranes can be used to protect the bone graft (this procedure is called guided bone regeneration).

The area of the jaw from which the bone graft is harvested is restored with artificial bone, and this area heals within a few days.

The grafted area can be used for implant placement after a few months.
