Endodontics

The word endodontics comes from two Greek words, "endo" and "odont", meaning "inside" and "tooth".

Endodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on diagnosing, preventing and treating diseases of the living tissue inside the tooth, known as the dental pulp (the "nerve").

It deals with the structure, function and diseases of the dental pulp and of the tissues around the tooth root, and with their treatment.

A tooth is made up of three layers – enamel, dentine and cementum – which protect its inner part.

The inside of a tooth is made of soft tissue – the pulp chamber – which contains nerves, blood vessels and other cells that keep the tooth hydrated and nourished.

Patients often have no idea what endodontic treatment or "removing the nerve" means when they hear these terms.

Endodontic (root canal) treatment is one of the most common dental treatments. It treats an inflamed or infected nerve in order to save a damaged tooth.

After root canal treatment, the tooth continues to fulfil its biological and mechanical functions, receiving nourishment from the surrounding tissues.

If you have any of the problems below, you should see a dentist about root canal treatment:

  • Strong sensitivity to very hot or cold food and drinks
  • Sensitivity when touching the tooth or chewing
  • A loose tooth
  • Local pain that ordinary painkillers do not relieve
  • Discolouration of the affected tooth (the pulp has died)
  • Advanced decay, infections or dental abscesses.

These conditions can only be treated at the dental clinic, with a treatment that does not cause pain or discomfort. We use a dental microscope, which gives a much higher success rate. This advanced technology helps save teeth from extraction.

Root canal treatment under the microscope

Root canal treatment performed under the microscope is more effective and safer than the traditional approach, thanks to the microscope's superior optics, which give a much better view of the inside of the tooth.

What are the advantages of this technology?

  • An accurate, reliable diagnosis;
  • Root canal infections are completely removed;
  • The treatment does not cause pain or discomfort;
  • Much better, clearer visibility;
  • Fast recovery after the procedure;
  • The treatment is done in a single session;
  • It costs much less than an extraction followed by an implant;
  • The natural tooth lasts longer.

What are the steps?

As with any medical treatment, the medical history is at the heart of microscope-assisted root canal treatment. This is the first step, when the dentist gathers all the information about the patient's dental problem.

A thorough review of the medical history follows, to find the source of the patient's symptoms, and then a series of X-rays is taken.

Based on this information, the dentist develops a specific, personalised treatment plan.

If you have any of these symptoms, or would like one of our specialists' opinion on the most effective treatment for your dental problem, we look forward to seeing you at Dr. Leuștean's clinic, where we will take care to keep you smiling.
