Dental implants

Dental implants are a modern solution for replacing missing teeth. Missing teeth can affect both your oral health and your self-confidence, and dental implants help you regain both, on the way to a complete smile.

Dental implants are artificial titanium roots that take over the natural function of a tooth root, supporting crowns or bridges. They provide stability and remove the need for dentures or partial plates.

Implants are made of special titanium alloys, because this material is fully compatible with the human body, corrosion-resistant and extremely light. They are also strong enough to withstand major dental procedures without the risk of damage or infection.

Implant placement is an important stage of the treatment and must be performed by an experienced dentist in the clinic. The implant surgeon places the implant in the jawbone, where the missing tooth used to be. In some cases, a temporary crown can also be fitted on the implant.

The gums heal within a few days, but the implant can be used to anchor the final crown only after three to six months, while the bone grows around the implant and stabilises it (osseointegration). After this phase, the implant feels like the root of a natural tooth.

A dental implant consists of the following elements:

  • The implant
  • The abutment
  • The crown

Why we only use custom abutments

The abutment is the part that connects the implant to the crown. Many clinics use standard, factory-made abutments, the same for every patient. We digitally design each abutment to match the shape of your gums and the position of your implant, and mill it individually.

What this means for you:

  • The crown emerges from the gum naturally, like a real tooth, with no visible edges.
  • The gum is properly supported around the implant, and the area is easier to clean.
  • The crown fits precisely, with no gaps where food can collect.

It costs more than a standard abutment, but it is a one-time investment in an implant designed to last.

How much does a complete implant tooth cost? The total price (implant, custom abutment and crown) depends on the implant system and the type of crown that suits your case. You receive it in writing at your consultation, together with your digital treatment plan. Component prices are listed on our Fees page.

Why choose dental implants?

Choosing dental implants over classic treatments brings a number of advantages:

  • Preserving facial aesthetics: Missing teeth can cause premature ageing and loss of facial structure, and dental implants are the answer to this problem. Atrophied jawbones give the face a prematurely aged look.
  • Without a tooth root, the jawbone gradually shrinks. An implant takes the place of the root, helps preserve your original appearance and prevents further damage or problems, so the face keeps its natural structure.
  • Keeping healthy teeth intact: The classic alternative for a missing tooth is a dental bridge, which requires grinding down the neighbouring teeth. With a dental implant, your natural teeth stay intact.
  • Fixed restorations: Classic dentistry needs supporting teeth to anchor a bridge. When there are no teeth at the back of the arch to act as supports, this is called terminal edentulism.
  • Classic dentistry solves this with removable restorations (dentures) that the patient takes out for cleaning. Dental implants allow fixed restorations in these areas and can also reduce costs compared with complex dentures.
  • Excellent retention and stability: Dental implants are firmly anchored in the upper or lower jawbone, which gives patients excellent comfort.

How is a dental implant placed?

Placing an implant is one of the most straightforward surgical procedures. Although it may sound complicated, patients who have had this treatment often say the placement was easier than a simple tooth extraction. At Dr. Leuștean's clinic we use high-quality anaesthetics during insertion to make sure patients are comfortable.

With high-quality anaesthetics, you will not feel any pain while the implants are being inserted.

For patients who have lost one or more teeth, an implant is the first step towards a better life, with excellent dental aesthetics and good oral health.

Because implant placement is an advanced surgical procedure, great care is taken from the very beginning. X-rays or even a CT scan of your jaw may be needed to make sure it is safe to proceed.

These first steps are important because they let us measure very precisely how much bone is available for the implant. We also decide the position of the implant and the type of implant needed. If there is not enough bone, bone graft material can be added to give the implant enough support.

  • How long does a dental implant last?

The quality of the implant, the dentist's skill, the amount of available bone and the patient's health all affect how long implants last.

To enjoy your dental implants for many years, it is essential to keep good oral hygiene, visit your dentist regularly and follow all of the dentist's instructions.

Dental implants continue to function well for 25–30 years after placement.

  • What can influence the lifespan of implants?

  • The amount of bone available in each individual case
  • The dentist's expertise, so that the implant is placed in the right position and its size is chosen correctly, avoiding later problems
  • The patient's general health
  • The implant system used
  • Following the dentist's instructions regarding:
  1. Preparation for surgery and post-operative recommendations
  2. How the implants are looked after, through proper hygiene and regular check-ups and professional cleanings at the clinic.
  • Who is the ideal candidate for dental implants?

There is no single ideal candidate for this treatment. If you have gaps in your teeth, whatever the cause, a dental implant may be the right solution to fully restore both the look of your smile and its function.

As for age, implants can be placed in people of all ages once bone growth has finished. The limits are young people whose bones are still growing and very elderly patients (over 90) with poor healing. General medical conditions are not a barrier as long as they are stable and treated.

Of course, in some cases, after a thorough examination and specialist tests, the doctor may decide that surgery is not needed and recommend an alternative treatment.

  • Is the surgery painful?

Most implant procedures are performed under local anaesthesia, which means they are not painful, so you can have a safe treatment without discomfort.

  • How long does the procedure take?

The duration depends on the number of implants to be placed and on the complexity of the case. On average, it ranges from 45 minutes to a few hours.
