Who hasn't had toothache at some point? Toothache can be dreadful, so it is essential to know what to do in these situations.

Toothache is a serious warning sign telling you that it is time to seek help from a dentist. Toothache may be caused by infection and always needs a dental check-up. Dental tissues cannot regenerate, so they cannot heal on their own.
According to a study by the American Academy of Family Physicians, 22% of adults experience toothache, gum pain or jaw pain at least once every six months. The good news is that, in most cases, a dentist can successfully get rid of toothache.

What is toothache?

It is a constant pain that grows in intensity. It is one of the sharpest and most intense pains you can have. Cold drinks, hot food or chewing can make the pain worse. If a tooth hurts, you should see a dentist as soon as possible to find out the cause and decide on the right treatment for your case.
The dentist treats toothache according to its cause. Sometimes it may be pulpitis, a condition caused by inflammation of the dental pulp, but in other cases toothache may be caused by other conditions. That is why the dentist will examine your mouth and, to determine the exact cause of the toothache and therefore the most effective treatment, will ask you to have a dental X-ray.

What causes toothache?

The most common causes of toothache are:
Tooth decay. If left untreated, cavities can progress and reach the nerves. At that point a continuous pain sets in, which can be eased for a short time with medication but does not go away until the dentist treats the condition. Most often, toothache occurs when the nerves and dental pulp are affected, and in this case endodontic (root canal) treatment is needed.

  • Dental fracture or crack. Any injury to the teeth can cause pain, so it is best to see a dentist straight away.
  • Gingivitis. As untreated gingivitis progresses, the gums begin to recede. The gum pulls back from its normal position and the root is left exposed, causing toothache.
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding). Patients who suffer from bruxism may experience toothache or even headaches because of the pressure placed on their teeth.

Other causes of toothache include:

  • Enamel erosion.
  • Tooth sensitivity.
  • Dental abscess.
  • Sinusitis.

In any of these cases, self-medication is not an option, and our advice is to book an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible to find out the cause and then start the right treatment.
